Description

Issued in 1940, United States Scott #922 features a portrait of Andrew Johnson and is part of the Presidential Series, widely known to collectors as the Prexies. This definitive series honored American presidents and statesmen in a consistent engraved format and served as the primary U.S. stamp series through the late 1930s and 1940s.

The stamp depicts Andrew Johnson in left-facing profile, engraved with fine line detail and framed by clean, modern typography reading “United States Postage.” Printed in carmine-rose, the 17-cent denomination was intended for higher-rate uses, including certain international mail and combined services, making it a less commonly used value than lower Prexie denominations.

This offering is a mint never hinged (MNH) plate block of four, with the plate number clearly visible in the selvage. The block retains full original gum with no hinge marks, thinning, or disturbances. Color is bright and even, impressions are sharp, and perforations are intact throughout. Plate blocks of higher-denomination Prexies are particularly attractive to collectors due to lower production and usage levels.

Scott #922 is an important issue for collectors of U.S. definitives, Presidential Series material, and plate-number multiples, especially in true never-hinged condition.
