Description
Issued in 1934, United States Scott #754 commemorates Mothers’ Day and is inscribed “In Memory and in Honor of the Mothers of America.” The design is based on James McNeill Whistler’s famous painting Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, commonly known as Whistler’s Mother, lending the stamp a solemn, reflective tone uncommon among U.S. commemoratives of the era.
Printed in violet, the 3-cent denomination corresponded to the standard first-class domestic letter rate, ensuring wide circulation and making the issue instantly familiar to the American public. The restrained composition, classical typography, and soft engraving align with the New Deal–era preference for dignified, emotionally resonant subjects.
This offering is a used block of four, bearing a centrally struck postal cancellation spanning all four stamps, confirming genuine contemporary usage. The stamps retain strong design detail, clear inscriptions, and intact perforations, with wear consistent with normal postal handling. Intact used blocks of this issue are less common than singles, as many were separated during use or later collecting.
Scott #754 remains an important commemorative for collectors of U.S. social history, thematic material related to family and motherhood, and 1930s postal issues, with multiples offering added appeal and display value.
