Issued in 1929, United States Scott #659 is part of the Kansas–Nebraska overprint series, created to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Kansas–Nebraska Act of 1854. This issue repurposed existing Fourth Bureau definitive stamps with bold black overprints, linking mid-19th-century American political history with early 20th-century philately.
The stamp features the familiar Warren G. Harding portrait from the 1½-cent definitive, overprinted “Kans.” in black. The underlying design presents Harding in profile within an oval frame, surrounded by ornate lettering and denomination tablets. The overprint is sharply applied and well centered, creating strong visual contrast against the original brown engraving.
This example is offered mint never hinged (MNH), retaining full original gum with no hinge marks, disturbances, or thinning. The stamp shows strong color, crisp overprint lettering, and intact perforations on all sides. Never-hinged examples of the Kansas–Nebraska overprints are particularly desirable, as many were hinged shortly after issue.
