This authentic U.S. First Flight Cover documents a route extension of Air Mail Route AM-1, flown from Chicago, Illinois in January 1959. The cover bears a clear Chicago, Illinois (AMF O’Hare) January 11, 1959 postmark, confirming first-day dispatch on the extended air mail route.

At left is a red illustrated cachet reading “U.S. Air Mail – Route Extension – AM-1 – First Flight,” featuring a route map connecting Chicago, Dayton, Columbus, Baltimore, and Washington. Route extension covers such as this represent refinements and expansions of established air mail corridors rather than inaugural flights, forming a distinct and collectible subset within U.S. airmail postal history.

The envelope is properly franked with a vertical pair of Scott #804, the 3¢ New York City Tercentenary commemorative stamps, along with Scott #1027, the 1¢ George Washington definitive, accurately paying the required air mail rate for the period. The cover is addressed to Geo. J. Schmid of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a known contemporary recipient of philatelic flight covers.

The reverse bears a Dayton, Ohio receiving postmark dated January 12, 1959, confirming completion of the flight and overnight air delivery. Light, even handling wear is present, consistent with genuine flown mail of the late 1950s.
