United States First Flight Cover – Fort Wayne, Indiana (United Air Lines), 1942
Franked with Scott #UC17 (5¢ Air Mail Envelope, Stamp Centenary Design)

This authentic U.S. First Flight Cover marks the inauguration of United Air Lines airmail service from Fort Wayne, Indiana, flown on November 1, 1942, during the World War II era. The cover bears a clear Fort Wayne, Ind., Nov 1, 1942 (11:00 AM) postmark confirming first-day carriage.

At left is a distinctive shield-shaped cachet reading “First Flight – Fort Wayne via United Air Lines”, featuring an equestrian image of Anthony Wayne, the city’s namesake. The cachet notes passengers, mail, express, and freight, highlighting the fully developed commercial air service operating at the time.

The envelope is franked with Scott #UC17, the 5¢ Air Mail postal card stamp from the U.S. Postage Stamp Centenary issue, depicting early aviation themes. Addressed to H. U. Blaisdell, Orangeburg, N.Y., with routing instructions noted at lower right, the cover shows light, even handling wear consistent with genuine flown wartime mail.

First flight covers from 1942 reflect the continued expansion and stabilization of domestic air routes despite wartime constraints. This Fort Wayne example represents an added Midwestern service point within the United Air Lines network and is a solid collectible for U.S. airmail and airline-themed postal history collections.
