Description

United States First Flight Cover – Allentown, Pennsylvania to Newark, New Jersey (1935)
Franked with Scott #727 (3¢ Washington, Presidential Series)

This authentic U.S. First Flight Cover commemorates Route AM-1 airmail service originating in Allentown, Pennsylvania, flown on September 14, 1935. The cover features a bold illustrated “FIRST FLIGHT / UNITED STATES AIR MAIL / AM-1” cachet depicting an aircraft above a stylized cityscape and shield, clearly identifying the route and origin.

The envelope is postmarked Allentown, Pa., Sep 14, 1935 (12:30 PM) and is properly franked with a pair of Scott #727, the 3¢ Washington issue from the Presidential Series, paying the correct airmail rate for the period. A VIA AIR MAIL endorsement appears at right.

Addressed to Frank Herget, General Delivery, Newark, N.J., the reverse bears a Newark, N.J. General Delivery receiving postmark dated September 14, 1935, confirming same-day first-flight delivery. Normal transit wear and light aging are present, consistent with genuine flown mail of the era.

Mid-1930s Route AM-1 first flight covers document the structured expansion of U.S. airmail into regularized regional networks linking Pennsylvania industrial centers with major Eastern hubs. This Allentown example, with its strong cachet and clear postal markings, represents a desirable and visually appealing piece of U.S. airmail and postal history.
