Description
Tunisia Scott #470–474 (1967) — “Cultural Heritage & Expo 67 Montreal” — Mint Never Hinged (MNH)
Issued in 1967 by the République Tunisienne, this vibrant five-stamp set celebrates both Tunisian cultural identity and the nation’s participation in Expo 67, the Montreal World’s Fair whose theme—“Man and His World”—embodied global progress and unity.
The series features a beautifully diverse mix of subjects:
-
50m Djerba Woman — Traditional dress of the island of Djerba, rendered in vivid orange against a palm oasis backdrop.
-
75m Gabès Woman — A traditional southern Tunisian costume from Gabès, shown in brilliant fuchsia and blue.
-
100m & 110m Expo 67 Issues — Abstract designs symbolizing humanity, technology, and communication, issued in two color varieties (blue and teal backgrounds).
-
155m Flamingos at Ichkeul Lake — A graceful wildlife scene depicting flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus), a nod to Tunisia’s natural beauty and ecological heritage.
Printed by Courvoisier S.A. and designed by Ben Abdallah, these stamps combine modernist design with ethnographic and natural themes, marking Tunisia’s confident engagement on the world stage during the post-independence era.
