Description

Tunisia Scott #C14 (1949) — “Eagle from Sousse Mosaic” — Used

Issued in 1949 by the Protectorat Français de Tunisie, this elegant 200-franc airmail stamp features a striking design based on an ancient Roman mosaic housed in the Musée de Sousse. The artwork depicts a soaring eagle, symbol of strength and freedom, rendered with fine engraving and rich blue tones characteristic of the era’s classic French colonial issues.

Inscribed “D’après mosaïque antique – Musée de Sousse” (“After an ancient mosaic – Sousse Museum”), the design links Tunisia’s classical heritage with modern aviation—bridging antiquity and progress.

Printed by Baraigne, engraved by Besson, this issue is part of Tunisia’s admired Airmail (Poste Aérienne) series, celebrated for its artistry and historical depth.

A beautiful and desirable example for collectors of aviation, classical art, and North African airmail issues.
