Description

This attractive trio of Trieste Zone A AMG-FTT overprints (Scott #85–87) originates from Italy’s 1950 issue for the European Tobacco Conference (Conferenza Europea del Tabacco – Roma MCML). Originally printed by Poste Italiane, these stamps were later overprinted AMG-FTT for postal use in the Free Territory of Trieste – Zone A, administered jointly by the Allied Military Government (AMG) and later the Italian authorities.

Each stamp features tobacco plants or tobacco workers—symbolic imagery chosen for the Rome conference:

  • Scott #85 — 5 Lire (Violet)
Tobacco plant in front of a processing facility; bold black AMG-FTT overprint.

  • Scott #86 — 20 Lire (Brown)
Larger, detailed tobacco plant with architectural background; AMG-FTT overprint clearly struck.

  • Scott #87 — 55 Lire (Blue)
Woman harvesting tobacco leaves, rendered in soft engraving; strong AMG-FTT overprint across the center.

These examples are unused hinged, with gum showing hinge marks but overall clean, bright impressions and firmly struck overprints. They are highly desirable to collectors of Trieste Zone A, AMG postal history, Italian overprints, or topical material related to agricultural products and European postwar administration.

A classic and culturally rich set from a fascinating transitional period in European philately.
