Description
This St. Vincent definitive stamp, Scott #284, was issued in 1970 as part of a pictorial wildlife series highlighting native bird species of the Caribbean. The design features the Ramier, also known as the scaly-naped pigeon (Columba squamosa), a forest-dwelling bird found throughout the Lesser Antilles.
The illustration shows the bird perched on a tree branch against a softly rendered landscape, emphasizing its deep purplish-blue plumage and contrasting red eye. Fine detail in the feathers and foliage reflects a naturalistic approach typical of late 20th-century Caribbean wildlife definitives, combining visual appeal with educational value. The bird’s common and scientific names are clearly printed on the stamp.
A small crown and “E II R” cypher appear in the upper corner, reflecting St. Vincent’s status as a British Commonwealth territory at the time. The denomination and country name are clearly legible, ensuring balance between design and postal function.
This example is offered unused with hinge, retaining original gum with evidence of a prior hinge attachment. Unused hinged copies remain collectible and are popular with bird, wildlife, and Caribbean-themed stamp collectors.
