Description
Issued in 1968, St. Lucia Scott #237–240 is a commemorative Christmas stamp set featuring reproductions of devotional paintings by the Spanish Baroque master Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. The issue focuses on tender depictions of the Virgin and Child, aligning religious art with the themes of the Christmas season.
Two designs are represented across the four stamps. One reproduces “Virgin and Child in Glory,” portraying the Madonna and Christ Child surrounded by a radiant heavenly aura, emphasizing divinity and spiritual warmth. The other design shows “Virgin and Child,” a more intimate and earthly composition highlighting maternal affection and serenity. Both works are framed in oval cartouches that echo the original paintings and lend the stamps a classical presentation.
Each denomination is printed in a distinct color palette—5c, 10c, 25c, and 35c—with careful tonal adjustments that enhance the mood and texture of the original artworks. The photogravure printing captures fine detail and soft color transitions, resulting in stamps that are visually rich despite their small format.
All stamps are offered mint never hinged (MNH), with full original gum, clean perforations, and fresh, vibrant color. A strong set for collectors of religious art, Christmas issues, or Caribbean thematic stamps.
