Description

Issued in 1968, St. Lucia Scott #231–234 is a commemorative stamp set celebrating masterpieces of Italian Renaissance religious art, issued in conjunction with the Christmas season. The set reproduces iconic paintings by Raphael and Titian, bringing classical European art to Caribbean philately through richly colored, carefully framed designs.

Two stamps reproduce Raphael’s “The Crucifixion”, depicting Christ on the cross attended by saints and mourners, rendered with balanced composition and spiritual gravity. The other two stamps feature details from Titian’s “Noli Me Tangere”, portraying the post-Resurrection encounter between Christ and Mary Magdalene in a pastoral landscape. Each artwork is presented within an ornate arched frame, enhancing the sense of reverence and historical continuity.

The set was issued in four denominations—10c, 15c, 25c, and 35c—each paired with a distinct color scheme that highlights different elements of the original paintings while maintaining cohesion across the series.
