Description

Issued in 1948, St. Lucia Scott #149–150 is a commemorative stamp set celebrating the founding of the University College of the West Indies, a landmark institution in Caribbean higher education. Established in 1948 as a college of the University of London, it later evolved into the University of the West Indies, serving students across the region.

The 3-cent stamp features the official coat of arms of the University College of the West Indies. The design centers on a pelican above an open book, symbolizing learning and enlightenment, accompanied by the Latin motto Oriens ex Occidente Lux (“Light rising from the West”). The engraving is crisp and formal, emphasizing the academic and symbolic importance of the institution.

The 12-cent stamp depicts Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, shown in academic robes in her role as the university’s first Chancellor. The portrait conveys ceremonial dignity and authority, reinforcing the institutional significance of the occasion.

Printed in complementary colors with fine engraved detail, the two stamps form a cohesive and historically meaningful set that reflects postwar educational development in the British Caribbean.

Both stamps are offered mint never hinged (MNH), with full original gum, clean perforations, and fresh, well-preserved color. A desirable pair for collectors of Caribbean issues, educational themes, or mid-20th-century Commonwealth commemoratives.
