Description
Issued in 1955, Saar Scott #257–259 commemorate the Volksbefragung (plebiscite) of 1955, a pivotal referendum in which voters of the Saar Territory rejected the proposed European Statute, a decision that ultimately led to Saar’s reunification with Germany in 1957. This set represents one of the most historically significant moments in Saar philately.
Each stamp depicts a different symbolic aspect of Saar’s identity and future.
-
Scott #257 (15 francs) shows an industrial landscape with mining structures, emphasizing Saar’s economic foundation and working-class strength.
-
Scott #258 (18 francs) features a bridge construction scene, symbolizing connection, transition, and reconstruction.
-
Scott #259 (30 francs) illustrates the University Library in Saarbrücken, representing education, civic life, and modern governance.
All three designs are overprinted “VOLKSBEFRAGUNG 1955”, directly linking the imagery to the referendum itself. Printed in distinct colors with engraved detail, the set reflects mid-1950s European commemorative style while documenting Saar’s final years as a separate political entity.
This complete set is offered mint never hinged, with full original gum, clean surfaces, and intact perforations throughout.
