Description
Issued in 1922, Saar Scott O15 is an official (Dienstmarke) stamp produced for use by the government administration of the Saar Territory during the period of League of Nations control. After World War I, Saar was placed under international administration, and official overprinted stamps were created specifically for government correspondence to distinguish it from private mail.
The stamp is overprinted “DIENSTMARKE” in bold diagonal lettering across a regular Saar postage design. The underlying stamp features a classical architectural building framed by decorative geometric borders, a style typical of Saar’s early definitive issues. The strong overprint ensured the stamp could not be misused for private postage and clearly marked it as government property.
Denominated 1 franc, this stamp was used exclusively on official correspondence from Saar’s civil authorities, making genuinely postally used examples especially desirable to collectors of occupation and mandate-era postal history.
This example is offered used, with a clear cancellation visible across the design. The overprint remains legible, the perforations are intact, and the stamp retains strong visual presence despite postal use.
