Description
Issued in 1953, Saar Scott B97 is a semi-postal (charity) stamp released to benefit Volkshilfe (People’s Aid), Saar’s long-standing social welfare organization that supported children, families, and those in economic distress. By the early 1950s, Volkshilfe stamps had become one of the territory’s most recognizable ways of funding public assistance through everyday postal use.
The design depicts two young children in a close, affectionate embrace, rendered in a soft, intimate style. Their expressions suggest comfort, trust, and emotional connection, reinforcing the stamp’s role as a visual appeal for child welfare and family support. The bold “VOLKSHILFE” inscription at the top and “SAAR” below anchor the image to its charitable and national purpose.
Denominated 18 francs plus a 7 franc charity surtax, the stamp was intended to raise funds specifically for social and family aid programs. Printed in warm red-violet tones, the finely engraved artwork highlights facial expression and texture, giving the image a gentle, almost painterly quality.
This example is offered unused, hinged, with original gum present and a hinge mark on the reverse. The stamp is well-centered, cleanly printed, and has intact perforations with pleasing overall appearance.
