Description

Issued in 1953, Saar Scott B96 is a semi-postal (charity) stamp produced to support Volkshilfe (People’s Aid), a long-running social welfare organization that provided assistance to families, children, and the economically vulnerable in the Saar Territory. By the early 1950s, Volkshilfe issues had become a familiar and trusted way for Saar residents to contribute to social programs through everyday postage.

The design shows a young child holding a small dog, rendered in a tender, intimate portrait style. The image conveys innocence, vulnerability, and the need for protection, making it especially effective as a charitable appeal. The inscription “VOLKSHILFE 1953” at the top and “SAAR” at the bottom frame the scene with clear identification of both purpose and origin.

Denominated 15 francs plus a 5 franc charity surtax, the stamp was intended to raise funds specifically for child and family welfare programs. Printed in soft purple tones, the finely engraved portrait style emphasizes gentle expression and emotional warmth.

This example is offered unused, hinged, with original gum present and a hinge mark on the reverse. The stamp is well-centered with intact perforations and clear, attractive detail.
