Description
Issued in 1952, Saar Scott B82 is a semi-postal (charity) stamp released by the Saar Territory to benefit the Red Cross, reflecting the ongoing humanitarian needs of the region in the aftermath of World War II. In the early 1950s, Saar remained politically and economically distinct from West Germany, and charity stamps played an important role in funding medical aid, refugee assistance, and postwar recovery.
The design is deeply emotional and intimate, showing a weary woman and child gazing outward beneath a protective veil. Their expressions convey vulnerability, endurance, and quiet hope. The red cross emblem at the bottom center anchors the image to the humanitarian mission of the Red Cross, transforming the stamp into both a fundraiser and a symbolic appeal for compassion.
Denominated 25 francs plus a 10 franc charity surtax, the stamp is printed in dark green tones that enhance the somber, reflective mood of the artwork. The finely engraved portrait style emphasizes facial expression and emotional depth, making this one of Saar’s most poignant charity issues.
This example is offered mint never hinged (MNH) with full original gum and no hinge marks. The stamp is fresh, well-centered, and sharply printed, with intact perforations and excellent visual appeal.
