Description

Issued in 1934, Saar Scott B51 is a semi-postal (charity) stamp released during the League of Nations administration of the Saar Territory to support Volkshilfe (People’s Aid), a social welfare organization that provided assistance to those affected by unemployment, poverty, and economic disruption during the interwar period. It belongs to Saar’s celebrated Volkshilfe series, which combined postage with organized charitable fundraising.

The design features a commanding allegorical female figure in motion, her body turned slightly as she reaches forward, embodying action, resolve, and compassion. Draped in classical garments, she represents society’s obligation to actively provide aid, not merely observe suffering. The inscription “VOLKSHILFE” at the top and “SAARGEBIET” at the bottom frame the figure with clear identification of both purpose and authority.

Denominated 2 francs plus a charity surtax, the stamp is printed in rich rose-red tones that give the image a sense of warmth and urgency. The bold engraving, with its sculptural modeling and strong contrasts, reflects the dramatic visual language favored by European charity issues of the early 1930s.

This example is offered unused, hinged, with original gum present and a hinge mark on the reverse. The stamp is well-defined, with intact perforations and strong eye appeal.
