Description

Issued in 1934, Saar Scott B50 is a semi-postal (charity) stamp produced during the League of Nations administration of the Saar Territory to support Volkshilfe (People’s Aid), a social welfare organization dedicated to assisting the unemployed, widows, and families suffering economic hardship in the interwar period. These Volkshilfe issues formed a coordinated series of relief stamps that combined normal postal service with organized charitable giving.

The design depicts a solitary allegorical woman wrapped in heavy drapery, her head bowed slightly as she clutches her cloak against her body. The figure conveys humility, vulnerability, and quiet endurance, evoking those who depended on public aid during difficult economic times. The bold “VOLKSHILFE” inscription above and “SAARGEBIET” below firmly identify the stamp’s charitable mission and issuing authority.

Denominated 1.50 francs plus a charity surtax, the stamp is printed in cool blue tones that enhance the somber, reflective mood of the artwork. The fine engraving and strong line work emphasize the sculptural quality of the figure, consistent with the classical aesthetic of Saar’s 1930s charity issues.

This example is offered unused, hinged, with original gum present and a hinge mark on the reverse. The stamp retains sharp detail, intact perforations, and very good visual appeal.
