Description
Issued in 1934, Saar Scott B49 is a semi-postal (charity) stamp released under the League of Nations administration of the Saar Territory to benefit Volkshilfe (People’s Aid), a social welfare organization devoted to supporting families affected by unemployment and poverty during the interwar years. Like the other Volkshilfe issues of this period, it paired everyday postal use with structured charitable fundraising.
The design shows a seated allegorical female figure, rendered in a calm, contemplative pose. Draped in flowing garments, she gently leans forward, her expression conveying care, thoughtfulness, and quiet resolve. The inscription “VOLKSHILFE” above and “SAARGEBIET” below frame the figure, clearly identifying the stamp’s purpose and authority while reinforcing the message of organized compassion.
Denominated 1 franc plus a charity surtax, the stamp is printed in soft violet tones that enhance the sense of dignity and restraint. The engraving emphasizes sculptural form and subtle shading, reflecting the classical aesthetic favored in many European charity stamps of the early 1930s.
This example is offered unused, hinged, with original gum present and a hinge mark on the reverse. The stamp shows strong detail, intact perforations, and pleasing overall appearance.
