Description
Issued in 1934, Saar Scott B48 is a semi-postal (charity) stamp produced during the League of Nations administration of the Saar Territory to support Volkshilfe (People’s Aid), a social welfare organization that provided assistance to the unemployed, the poor, and families affected by economic hardship. These Volkshilfe issues were a cornerstone of Saar’s interwar relief efforts, combining everyday postage with structured charitable fundraising.
The design depicts a powerful allegorical female figure in dramatic motion, her arm raised as she looks outward beyond the frame. Draped in flowing robes, she represents strength, vigilance, and collective responsibility, embodying the idea that society must actively reach out to support those in need. The bold red “VOLKSHILFE” at the top reinforces the stamp’s charitable mission, while “SAARGEBIET” at the bottom marks its issuing authority.
Denominated 60 centimes plus a charity surtax, the stamp is printed in striking red tones that heighten the sense of urgency and public appeal. The engraving style, with its strong contrasts and sculptural modeling, reflects the dramatic visual language common to European social relief stamps of the early 1930s.
This example is offered unused, hinged, with original gum present and a hinge mark on the reverse. The design is bold and clean, with intact perforations and very strong visual presence.
