Description
Issued in 1933, Saar Scott B44 is a semi-postal (charity) stamp produced during the League of Nations administration of the Saar Territory. This issue commemorates the disaster at Neunkirchen, which occurred on 10 February 1933, when a catastrophic gas explosion at an ironworks caused extensive destruction and loss of life.
The design presents a stark industrial landscape in ruins, with damaged structures and smoke rising in the background, conveying both the scale of the disaster and the vulnerability of Saar’s heavy industry communities. The inscription “NEUNKIRCHEN, 10. FEBRUAR 1933” anchors the stamp to the specific event, while “SAARGEBIET” identifies the issuing authority.
Denominated 60 centimes + surtax, the stamp was sold at a premium to raise funds for disaster relief, making it both a postal issue and a humanitarian appeal. Printed in deep red tones, the engraving emphasizes contrast and drama, consistent with early 1930s European semi-postal design.
This example is offered unused, hinged, with original gum present and a hinge mark on the reverse. The design remains clear and well-centered, with intact perforations.
