Description
Issued in 1934, Saar Scott B40 is a semi-postal (charity) stamp released under the League of Nations administration of the Saar Territory to benefit Volkshilfe (People’s Aid), a social welfare program supporting relief efforts during the interwar period.
The design depicts a townscape dominated by twin church towers, a strong architectural motif conveying stability, faith, and communal responsibility. Finely engraved with careful attention to perspective and masonry detail, the image reflects the sober, dignified aesthetic typical of early 1930s European semi-postals. The inscriptions “VOLKSHILFE” and “SAARGEBIET” clearly identify the charitable purpose and issuing authority.
With a denomination of 1.50 francs + surtax, this issue extends the Volkshilfe series into higher values, underscoring the fundraising intent of the program. Printed in cool blue tones, the stamp complements earlier values while standing on its own as a visually striking civic scene.
This example is offered unused, hinged, with original gum present and a hinge mark on the reverse. The design remains sharp and well-centered, with intact perforations.
