Description
Issued in 1934, Saar Scott B37 is a semi-postal (charity) stamp released during the League of Nations administration of the Saar Territory. The stamp was issued to support Volkshilfe (People’s Aid), a social welfare program providing assistance to those affected by economic hardship during the interwar period.
The design depicts a dramatic hillside village scene dominated by prominent church towers rising above clustered homes, symbolizing community, resilience, and social solidarity. A relief emblem and donation symbolism appear in the foreground, reinforcing the stamp’s charitable purpose. The inscription “VOLKSHILFE” at the top and “SAARGEBIET” at the bottom clearly identify both the function and issuing authority.
Denominated 40 centimes + charity surtax, the stamp reflects Saar’s long tradition of semi-postal issues that combined everyday postal use with organized social support. Printed in muted brown tones, the engraving emphasizes architectural detail and atmospheric depth, characteristic of early 1930s European stamp design.
This example is offered unused, hinged, with original gum present and a hinge mark on the reverse. The design remains clear and well-centered, with intact perforations.
