Description
Issued in 1954, Saar Scott B101–B103 are semi-postal (charity) stamps produced to benefit Volkshilfe (People’s Aid), continuing Saar’s long tradition of using charity stamps to support child and family welfare. By this point in the early 1950s, Volkshilfe had become one of the most visible social institutions in the Saar Territory, and its stamps were widely used to raise funds for children’s health, education, and basic support.
The designs reproduce three classic European child portraits, each drawn from historical artwork and presented in a finely engraved style. Scott B101 shows a young boy holding a bird, symbolizing care and responsibility. Scott B102 depicts a formally dressed girl in an elegant 18th-century style, representing dignity and upbringing. Scott B103 features a serious young boy holding a small book or card, suggesting learning and moral development. Together, the trio evokes childhood across time, reinforcing the universality of the Volkshilfe mission.
The stamps are denominated 5 francs + 3 franc surtax (B101), 10 francs + 5 franc surtax (B102), and 15 francs + 7 franc surtax (B103). Printed in red, green, and violet tones, the set combines artistic reproduction with Saar’s tradition of finely engraved charity issues.
These examples are offered mint never hinged (MNH) with full original gum and no hinge marks. All three stamps are fresh, well-centered, and sharply printed, with intact perforations and excellent overall appearance.
