Description
Issued in 1954, Saar Scott #248 commemorates the Internationale Saarmesse (International Saar Trade Fair), continuing Saar’s postwar effort to promote industrial production, commerce, and international economic engagement. The Saarmesse series documents the territory’s emphasis on modernization and trade during its period of political autonomy prior to reintegration with Germany in 1957.
The design depicts a modern exhibition hall and fountain, with clean architectural lines and a forward-looking composition that emphasizes openness and progress. A stylized figure appears atop the building, reinforcing themes of achievement and aspiration. The inscription “INTERNATIONALE SAARMESSE 1954” is prominently displayed at the bottom, with “SAAR” and the denomination 15 francs printed at the top.
Printed in green tones with fine engraved detail, the stamp reflects mid-1950s European design sensibilities, balancing realism with symbolic clarity. This issue forms part of a multi-year Saarmesse commemorative program documenting the region’s economic identity during the postwar reconstruction era.
This example is offered unused, hinged, with original gum present and a hinge mark on the reverse. The design remains sharp and well-defined, with intact perforations.
