Description

Issued in 1953, Saar Scott #246 commemorates the Internationale Saarmesse (International Saar Trade Fair), an event promoting the Saar Territory’s industrial production, commercial exchange, and international trade during the postwar reconstruction period.

The design features a bold modernist emblem, centered on a large stylized letter “S” rising from geometric block forms that symbolize industry, manufacturing, and economic foundations. The inscription “INTERNATIONALE SAARMESSE 1953” appears prominently at the top, while “SAAR” and the 15-franc denomination are printed at the bottom.

Printed in deep blue with crisp engraved detail, the stamp exemplifies early 1950s European graphic design, using abstraction and symbolism to convey economic optimism and industrial strength. This issue forms part of Saar’s Saarmesse commemorative series issued prior to the territory’s reintegration with Germany in 1957.

This example is offered used, bearing a visible cancellation consistent with normal postal use. The design remains clear and well-defined, with wear appropriate to the issue.
