Description

Issued in 1953, Saar Scott #246 commemorates the Internationale Saarmesse (International Saar Trade Fair), an event intended to promote the Saar Territory’s industrial output, commercial activity, and international trade connections during the postwar reconstruction period.

The design features a bold modernist emblem, dominated by a large stylized letter “S” rising above geometric block forms suggestive of industry, production, and economic foundations. The composition emphasizes strength, stability, and forward momentum, reflecting the Saar’s effort to present itself as an outward-looking industrial region. The inscription “INTERNATIONALE SAARMESSE 1953” appears at the top, with “SAAR” and the denomination 15 francs printed at the bottom.

Rendered in deep blue with crisp engraved line work, the stamp exemplifies early-1950s European graphic design, combining abstraction with symbolic clarity. This issue forms part of a small group of Saarmesse stamps documenting the territory’s economic identity prior to its reintegration with Germany in 1957.

This example is offered unused, hinged, with original gum present and a hinge mark on the reverse. The design remains sharp and well-defined, with intact perforations.
