Description
Issued in 1952, Saar Scott #231 commemorates the Saarmesse (Saar Trade Fair), an event designed to promote industry, commerce, and economic recovery in the Saar Territory during the postwar period. At the time of issue, Saar occupied a unique political and economic position in Europe, distinct from both France and West Germany.
The design features a stylized industrial emblem, combining a symbolic figure, a dollar-sign motif, and geometric forms set against a globe backdrop. The imagery emphasizes labor, trade, and international commerce, reflecting the Saar’s industrial base and its outward-looking economic aspirations in the early 1950s. The inscription “SAARMESSE 1952” appears at the top, with “SAAR” and the 15-franc denomination at the bottom.
Printed in a rich red-brown tone, the stamp uses clean, modern graphic elements typical of early postwar European design. This issue forms part of Saar’s commemorative program prior to its reintegration with Germany in 1957.
This example is offered used, bearing a visible cancellation consistent with normal postal use. The design remains clear and well-defined, with wear appropriate to the issue.
