Description
Issued in 1950 during the period of Saar autonomy following World War II, Saar Scott #218 is a pictorial definitive stamp depicting the Großer Stiefel bei Rentrisch (“Great Boot” rock formation), a well-known natural landmark in the Saar region. The massive sandstone formation is shown set within a wooded landscape, emphasizing Saar’s natural heritage alongside its industrial identity.
The stamp is inscribed “SAAR” and printed in a violet-purple tone, with the rock formation rendered in finely engraved line work that highlights texture, erosion, and scale. Trees and surrounding terrain frame the central image, balancing geological interest with scenic composition. The denomination 45 francs appears at the upper right.
This issue forms part of the later Saar pictorial definitive series, which expanded regional representation beyond labor and industry to include distinctive natural and cultural landmarks, reinforcing a sense of local identity during a politically transitional period.
This example is offered unused hinged, with original gum present and light hinge marks on the reverse. The front is clean with fresh color and intact perforations.
