Issued in 1957, Saar Scott B121–B126 is a complete semi-postal (charity) set released by Saarland shortly after the territory’s political integration into the Federal Republic of Germany. These stamps were produced as Wohlfahrtsmarke (welfare stamps), with surtax proceeds directed to social welfare, charitable, and humanitarian causes. They represent the final chapter of Saar’s long and distinctive tradition of charity issues.
The six designs celebrate Saarland’s people, traditions, and values. The top row depicts working figures: a woman churning butter, a grape harvester, and a farmer with a pitchfork, symbolizing agriculture, labor, and rural life. The lower row includes a portrait of Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen, a pioneer of cooperative banking and social reform, alongside two heraldic folklore designs featuring stylized animals inspired by regional legends and medieval imagery. Together, the set blends everyday life, social responsibility, and cultural heritage.
