Description
This is a mint never hinged (MNH) airmail stamp pair from Romania, Scott #C51a and C52a, issued in 1957 to commemorate the launch of the first artificial satellites and early milestones of the Space Age.
The stamps celebrate the successful launch of Sputnik 1 on 4 October 1957 and Sputnik 2 on 3 November 1957, marking humanity’s first ventures into orbit. The designs feature stylized globes of Earth with orbital paths and satellite imagery, paired with commemorative inscriptions honoring scientific and technical achievement.
These particular issues are the “a” varieties, distinguished by their attached commemorative labels (tabs) bearing explanatory text and dates. Such tabbed airmail issues are especially desirable among collectors for their enhanced historical context and visual presentation.
Printed in cool blue-green tones with mid-century graphic styling, the stamps reflect the optimism and technological fascination of the late 1950s.
Condition:
Mint never hinged (MNH). Original gum intact and undisturbed. Stamps and attached labels are clean, fresh, and well centered, with intact perforations.
