Description
Portugal – Scott #585–586 (1943) form part of the Portuguese Legion issue, created to honor the Legião Portuguesa, a paramilitary organization active during the Estado Novo regime. Designed by António Lima, these stamps feature a bold cross motif symbolizing unity and national pride. The 1 Escudo red and 1$75 blue denominations are finely printed with “Correio de Portugal” inscriptions in Gothic script and the Legion’s emblem below. These stamps reflect Portugal’s mid-20th-century nationalist iconography and historical political context. Both examples are used, bearing clear postal cancellations that preserve the intricate design and strong color contrast.
