Description

Issued in 1973 to commemorate Papua New Guinea’s achievement of self-government, this two-stamp set features traditional tribal masks framed by woven designs. The artwork symbolizes national unity, identity, and the transition toward independence (which would follow in 1975).

Designed by M. Downs, printed by the Note Printing Branch, Melbourne, and inscribed with the national motto “UNITE-BUNG WANTAIM NA PRAGOUE” (“Unite, Work Together, and Advance”), the issue celebrates the country’s cultural heritage and collective spirit.
