Description
Issued in 1964 as part of Papua & New Guinea’s celebrated “Butterflies” definitive series, this 4¢ stamp features the striking Graphium weiskei, a rare and colorful swallowtail butterfly native to the highlands of New Guinea.
Known commonly as the Purple Spotted Swallowtail, Graphium weiskei is prized for its vivid combination of emerald, lilac, and chocolate-brown tones. Against the soft lavender background, the butterfly’s intricate patterning is beautifully captured through fine recess-engraving — a hallmark of Harrison & Sons Ltd., the London printer responsible for many of Papua & New Guinea’s mid-century issues.
This definitive series celebrates the country’s extraordinary biodiversity and remains one of the most admired Pacific stamp designs of the 20th century.
Condition: Used, with light circular date cancel (well centered).
