Issued in 1964 as part of the beautifully engraved “Butterflies” definitive series, this 1¢ stamp from Papua & New Guinea features the brilliant Papilio ulysses autolycus, also known as the Ulysses Swallowtail — a large, iridescent blue butterfly native to the rainforests of northern Australia and New Guinea.

The series was designed to showcase the region’s natural beauty and biodiversity, combining elegant artistry with scientific accuracy. The butterfly appears vividly against a rose background with “PAPUA & NEW GUINEA” inscribed above.

This issue was produced under Australian administration during the transition from colonial to self-governing territory.
