Description
Netherlands Scott B159–B163 is a 1948 semipostal charity set issued to support social welfare and relief programs in the Netherlands during the postwar recovery period. Each stamp carries a mandatory surtax, placing the issue in the Scott B (semipostal) category.
The five-stamp set features a finely engraved allegorical female figure seated beside a sheaf of grain, symbolizing care, nourishment, renewal, and rebuilding. The classical imagery reflects themes of sustenance and compassion, resonating strongly with the humanitarian purpose of the issue. While the central design remains consistent across the set, each denomination is distinguished by its own color and surtax value.
The stamps display the high-quality line engraving and restrained artistic style characteristic of late-1940s Dutch semipostals. Proceeds from the surtax were directed toward public assistance efforts during a period of economic hardship and reconstruction following World War II.
Offered here as a complete used set, with clear cancellations, sound perforations, and solid color retention. Used examples of this issue are especially desirable for collectors assembling representative postwar charity sets or completing Netherlands semipostal runs.
