Description

Netherlands Scott #515–517 is a 1972 commemorative stamp set highlighting important Dutch public interests and national institutions through bold, modern graphic design. Unlike semi-postal issues, these stamps were issued without surcharge and served as standard postage while promoting awareness of civic, health, and safety initiatives.

The set includes three visually striking designs:

  • 25c – Cattle Registration (Rundvee-Stamboek):
Features stylized dairy cattle, representing livestock registration and agricultural improvement. The design reflects the central role of cattle breeding and recordkeeping in the Dutch agricultural economy.

  • 25c – Cancer Control (Kankerbestrijding):
Depicts a symbolic crab, the internationally recognized emblem of cancer, emphasizing public health awareness and national efforts to combat the disease.

  • 40c – Maritime Rescue (Redding):
Shows a rescue vessel navigating heavy seas, commemorating 150 years of organized maritime rescue in the Netherlands and honoring the country’s long seafaring tradition.

Issued during a period when Dutch stamps embraced clean lines, symbolic imagery, and strong color blocks, this set is a representative example of early 1970s Netherlands graphic design. The stamps appeal to collectors of Netherlands issues, public health themes, agriculture, maritime subjects, and modern European design.

All three stamps are offered mint never hinged, with full original gum and sharp perforations.
