Description

Netherlands Scott B181 is a 1949 semipostal charity stamp issued under the theme “Voor het Kind” (For the Child) to support child welfare programs in the Netherlands during the postwar recovery period. As a semipostal issue, the stamp includes a mandatory surtax, placing it in the Scott B category.

The stamp features a photographic-style portrait of an infant, rendered with striking realism and emotional directness. This modern design marked a departure from earlier engraved charity issues, emphasizing vulnerability, care, and the urgent need for social support for children affected by the aftermath of World War II. The simple composition and soft tonal shading focus attention squarely on the child’s expression.

The printed inscription indicates the surtax contribution and the limited validity period for postal use, ending December 31, 1948, as noted at the bottom of the design. Proceeds from the surtax were directed to organizations providing assistance and protection for children.

Offered here in unused hinged condition, with original gum present and a light hinge mark typical of mid-century Dutch semipostal issues. Color remains fresh, the image is clear, and perforations are intact.
