Description
Issued in 1949, Malaya Selangor Scott #78 commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the international organization founded in 1874 to coordinate and standardize postal services worldwide. This issue reflects Selangor’s participation in the global postal system at a time when international mail was becoming faster and more reliable through expanding air and sea routes.
The design features a classical allegorical figure seated against a stylized map of the world, holding a caduceus and a letter, symbolizing communication, commerce, and the transmission of mail across borders. Envelopes are shown flying through the air, reinforcing the theme of global correspondence. The engraved artwork is highly detailed, with fine linework and a balanced composition typical of mid-20th-century commemorative stamps.
Denominated 25 cents, the stamp was intended for higher-value letter and international mail rates, making it a practical as well as symbolic tribute to the UPU. Its denomination ensured that it would see regular postal use on overseas and heavier correspondence.
This example is offered used, showing a clear postal cancellation consistent with normal circulation. The stamp retains sharp detail, strong color, and intact perforations, with light handling wear appropriate to its age.
