Description
Issued in 1949, Malaya Selangor Scott #77 commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the international organization founded in 1874 to standardize and coordinate global postal services. The UPU played a crucial role in enabling reliable international mail, and this commemorative issue reflects Selangor’s participation in the worldwide postal network during the late colonial period.
The design presents a richly detailed allegorical scene featuring two globe hemispheres flanking a central steamship, symbolizing the movement of mail across oceans. Above, an airplane crosses the sky, representing the growing importance of airmail in the modern postal system. Ribbons inscribed “Universal” and “Postal Union” wrap around the globes, while the dates 1874 and 1949 mark the organization’s founding and anniversary. The intricate engraving style and symmetrical layout give the stamp a formal, classic commemorative appearance.
Denominated 15 cents, the stamp was intended for standard letter postage, making it a widely used and highly visible tribute to international postal cooperation. Its practical value ensured it appeared on everyday mail as well as on philatelic covers.
This example is offered used, bearing a clear cancellation consistent with postal circulation. The stamp shows strong design detail and well-defined perforations, with light wear appropriate to its age and use.
