Description
Issued in 1963, Federation of Malaya Scott #114–115 commemorates the Kanchangan Hydroelectric Project in the Cameron Highlands, a major infrastructure initiative designed to support the nation’s rapid industrialization and rural electrification. As Malaya moved into the 1960s, large-scale power generation projects were central to economic planning, providing energy for industry, urban growth, and improved living standards across the country.
The design features a sweeping view of the hydroelectric dam set within the lush, mountainous landscape of the Cameron Highlands. High-voltage transmission towers rise prominently in the foreground, their cables stretching across the scene to symbolize the distribution of modern power throughout the region. The combination of natural scenery and engineered structures reflects the balance between Malaya’s rich environment and its drive toward technological progress.
Denominated 20 sen and 30 sen, these stamps were intended for common letter and postcard rates, ensuring that the message of national development would circulate widely through everyday postal use. Their practical denominations made them a functional and visible part of the postal system while promoting this key infrastructure project.
This mint never hinged pair is well preserved, showing fresh, bright colors, sharp printed detail, and full original gum. The stamps have clean perforations and no hinge marks, making them an attractive example of this early Malaysian development-themed issue.
