Description
Issued in 1994, Malagasy Scott #1192–1199 is a pictorial commemorative set titled “Poissons d’Aquarium” (Aquarium Fish), depicting a variety of ornamental freshwater fish species. Released by the Republic of Madagascar, the issue reflects the country’s late-20th-century focus on colorful thematic subjects with strong international appeal.
The set features finely illustrated fish rendered in vibrant, painterly detail, each shown in a naturalistic aquatic setting. Species depicted include angelfish, bettas, cichlids, catfish, and other popular aquarium varieties, emphasizing form, coloration, and fin structure. The designs balance scientific illustration with decorative composition, typical of Madagascar’s high-quality thematic issues of the period.
In addition to the individual stamps, the issue includes a souvenir sheet featuring a large-format illustration of a goldfish (Carassius auratus), framed by soft aquatic tones and labeled “POISSONS D’AQUARIUM.” The sheet enhances the set’s presentation value and reinforces the aquarium theme.
Denominations range from low to high values, expressed in both Malagasy francs and ariary, reflecting the transitional currency system in use at the time. The unified visual style across the stamps and souvenir sheet makes the set particularly attractive for topical collectors of fish, wildlife, and aquarium themes.
This complete set is offered mint never hinged (MNH), including the souvenir sheet, with full original gum throughout. All items are clean, well-centered, and retain fresh color with intact perforations.
