Description

Issued in 1974, Macao Scott #435–436 commemorate the Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974, the peaceful military-led uprising in Portugal that brought an end to the Estado Novo regime. Released under Portuguese administration, the stamps mark a pivotal moment of political change that also reshaped Portugal’s relationship with its overseas territories, including Macao.

The designs feature a stylized figure raising a rifle adorned with a carnation, a powerful symbol of the revolution’s largely nonviolent character. Behind the figure, simplified silhouettes of people and flags create a sense of collective action and popular movement. The bold, modern graphic style departs from traditional engraved designs, reflecting the revolutionary theme and the visual language of political posters of the era.

Scott #435 is denominated 10 avos and printed in warm ochre and green tones, while Scott #436, with a denomination of 1 pataca, uses a brighter green background with contrasting accent colors. Both stamps bear the inscription “25 abril 1974” and “1º ANIVERSÁRIO,” clearly identifying the event and its first anniversary. Together, the pair captures the political and symbolic significance of the Carnation Revolution as reflected in late-period Portuguese colonial philately.

These examples are offered used, each bearing visible postal cancellations consistent with circulation. Both stamps retain strong color, clear design elements, and intact perforations.
