Description
Liechtenstein – Scott #898–900 (1988) – “Der Brief” (The Letter) – Mint Never Hinged Set of 3
This beautifully detailed three-stamp set, Scott #898–900, was issued by Liechtenstein in 1988 as part of a cultural series titled “Der Brief” (“The Letter”). Each stamp illustrates a different scene themed around the writing, receiving, or presence of a personal letter—capturing the quiet intimacy and historical charm of pre-modern correspondence.
Painted by C. Eberle and printed with the superb color precision of W. Seidel, these stamps feature:
-
#898 – 50 rp
A letter left on the ornate carpet beside a richly draped bed—an evocative still-life hinting at secrecy or a message discovered at dawn. -
#899 – 90 rp
A meticulously rendered writing desk with parchment, quill, candle, and flowers—a classic interior scene celebrating the act of letter-writing. -
#900 – 200 rp
A refined 18th-century lady seated at her desk, composing a letter by candlelight, rich with period costume and décor.
All three issues display:
-
Warm, painterly detail
-
Period furnishings and costumes
-
A narrative thread across the set
-
Full original gum, Mint Never Hinged (MNH)
-
Exceptional print quality typical of late-20th-century Liechtenstein issues
An elegant set ideal for collectors of Liechtenstein, fine art on stamps, historical interiors, and literary/letter-writing topicals.
