Description

Libya – Scott #173–174 (1956) – 15m & 35m – First Anniversary of Independence – Mint Never Hinged

This attractive two-stamp set, Scott #173–174, was issued by Libya on 14 December 1956 to commemorate the first anniversary of Libyan independence (1955–1956). These stamps celebrate the newly united Kingdom of Libya, formed from the regions of Tripolitania, Cyrenaica, and Fezzan—all of which are depicted prominently on the map design.

Each stamp features:

  • A map of Libya showing Tripoli, Benghazi, and key regions

  • A Libyan flag marking the capital

  • Arabic and French inscriptions (“Postes Mills,” dates, and commemorative text)

  • The independence date: 14 Dec. 1955–1956

The values include:

  • 15 mills – light blue & tan

  • 35 mills – deep blue & rose-tan

Both stamps are Mint Never Hinged (MNH) with full original gum, fresh color, and excellent presentation. A beautiful pair for collectors of Libya, Middle East history, post-colonial independence, or map on stamps topicals.
