Issued by Japan in 1968, Scott #636–636A depicts Byōdō-in Temple in Uji, one of Japan’s most celebrated examples of classical Buddhist architecture. The design shows the temple complex reflected in a tranquil pond, emphasizing symmetry, harmony, and the refined aesthetics of the Heian period.

These two stamps share the same basic design but represent different printings/shades, a distinction recognized by the Scott catalog.
