Description
Issued in 1998, Japan Scott #2642–2643 honors two influential figures in Japanese literature and cultural history, presented in distinct artistic styles that reflect their eras and legacies.
Scott #2642 features Takizawa Bakin (1767–1848), a prolific Edo-period writer best known for his long-form historical and moral tales. The design draws directly from traditional woodblock aesthetics, surrounding the author with narrative imagery drawn from his works. Scott #2643 depicts Fujiwara Yoshie (1898–1976), a modern novelist and playwright, rendered in a more contemporary engraved portrait style that reflects 20th-century literary sensibilities.
Both stamps are offered used, with visible but non-intrusive cancellations that do not overwhelm the portraits or background elements. Together, the pair provides a concise visual survey of Japan’s literary evolution from the Edo period to the modern era.
