Description
Issued in 1933–1934, Ireland Scott #88–89 commemorates the Holy Year (Anno Sanctus) proclaimed by Pope Pius XI. Holy Years were major events in the Catholic calendar, and Ireland’s participation reflected the central role of Catholicism in the cultural and spiritual life of the Irish Free State during the interwar period.
Both stamps feature a powerful religious design centered on the Cross of Salvation, accompanied by the Latin inscription “IN CRUCE SALUS” (“In the Cross, Salvation”). The cross is framed within a circular emblem and surrounded by architectural and ornamental elements that lend the design a solemn, almost medal-like quality. The dates 1933–34 appear prominently, marking the Holy Year observance.
The set consists of two denominations:
-
2 pence, printed in dark green
-
3 pence, printed in blue
The word “ÉIRE” is displayed at the top of each stamp, reinforcing national identity alongside religious devotion. The stamps’ engraved style, balanced symmetry, and restrained palette are characteristic of early Irish religious commemoratives, which often blended medieval Christian symbolism with modern stamp design.
This pair is offered used, bearing postal cancellations consistent with genuine circulation. Both stamps retain strong detail, legible inscriptions, and intact perforations with normal wear appropriate to use.
